  12. Brilliant results with Cfast!

We have been getting brilliant results with Cfast. This treatment can take up to 6 months to get your teeth straight, but for less severe cases we have seen some patients complete treatment with in 4 months! This procedure straightens your front 6 teeth and does not interfere with the bite.

Cfast might not be suitable for everyone though. If the back teeth are in a good biting position, the front teeth can be straightened using Cfast ™. This works using a tooth coloured, barely noticeable fixed appliance that straightens the front teeth. At the end of the treatment, a fixed bar is hidden and bonded behind the teeth, as well as a night time guard are provided to prevent any relapse and ensure a permanent straight smile. This treatment is only available for adult patients and can give you a smile that you have always wanted with no damage to your teeth whatsoever.

    Layout 1

Teeth staining can ruin a great smile.

The truth is, what you eat and drink has a big impact on the whiteness of your teeth. Food and drink that can stain your teeth. Just think, anything that leaves a mark on your clothes can also stain your teeth.

Sadly, some well-loved favourites top the list: Coffee, Tea, Red wine, Grape or cranberry juice, Blueberries, Soy sauce, Tomato sauce… No need to panic!! You don’t have to avoid these foods altogether but it is a good idea to cut down and brush or rinse your mouth thoroughly after enjoying them.

As well as being bad for your health, smoking can cause a lot of staining on your teeth. The only way to get rid of the staining is by visiting a dental hygienist.

Teeth whitening can transform the colour of your teeth quickly, painlessly and with no damage to the enamel. It has also been proven to increase self confidence! Remember, taking proper care of your teeth will help keep them looking bright and healthy.

If your teeth are stained and would like it removed click here to book an appointment with your hygienist.

Thursday saw another successful Kids Day here at The Dental Clinic. Like previous Kids’ Days, we offered free check-ups all day, which came with a free raffle ticket for each child with a chance to win some amazing prizes!  Also, back by popular demand we had Michael the magician who came in to entertain the children whilst they were waiting to see the dentist. He amazed them with his magic tricks and made lots of balloon models for the children to go home with.

After the children had finished having fun  with the magician and had their check-ups, they made their way downstairs where they were met by Tracy our hygienist who gave them oral hygiene instructions and diet advice. There were also given lots of freebies including toothbrushes, sticker charts, toothpaste and egg timers!

On the way to see Tracy everyone couldn’t help but notice our new addition to the Kids Day… A photo booth! This was definitely very popular with the children, parents and not forgetting the staff! If you would like to have a photo booth for a birthday party or celebration, we would highly recommend booking through www.dobooth.com.

Congratulations to Jodie Gafson who won 1st prize on our raffle! And well done to Charlie Turnham and Ojas Sharma – they came 2nd and 3rd and won a top of the range electric toothbrush each!

  16. Staff Outing!

    InstaSize_2015_0 _ 15724

Last week the staff at the practice enjoyed an outing to see ’Kooza’ a Cirque Du Soleil show at the Royal Albert Hall.  Cirque du Soleil is a Quebec based company recognised all over the world for high-quality, artistic entertainment.

The performers were absolutely outstanding! The acts were breath-taking and totally heart-stopping!

One of the acts showed the art of contortionism – 3 women bending their bodies in ways we didn’t think was humanly possible.  The way they moved was simply beautiful.

Then, there were the dangerous acts! Four men who performed tricks on twin wires criss-crossing diagonally from left to right, 15 to 25 foot above the stage.  The Wheel of Death was next – This huge contraption was made to rotate at a high speed by two artists who leap and counter-rotate in a death-defying display of fearless acrobatics and amazing teamwork. We were on the edge of our seats at this point and even heard a few screams coming from the audience!

Overall we all thoroughly enjoyed the show and would definitely recommend it!   Go ahead and book your tickets – You will not be disappointed!

  17. Dental Hygiene

This month at The Dental Clinic we are promoting good oral hygiene!

Maintaining good oral hygiene is one of the most important things you can do for your mouth. Your gums are the foundations for your teeth, they need to be healthy to support them. Gum disease is also linked to lots of other health problems such as diabetes and heart disease.

If your gums are inflamed, red or bleed on brushing this can be an early sign of gum disease. Halitosis (bad breath) can also be a sign of bad oral hygiene. There are many ways to get your gums back to being pink and healthy.

Here are some helpful tips below on how to maintain a healthy mouth!

    • Brush twice a day for at least 2 minutes with a fluoride toothpaste
    • Floss or use  inter-dental brushes at least every other day
    • Regular  visit your dentist (every 6 months)
    • Regular visit your hygienist (every 2-6 months depending on what your hygienist has recommended)
    • Eat a balanced diet and limit snacks between meals
    • If your gums bleed on brushing, ignore the bleeding! Keep brushing!

A Dental Hygienist’s job is to help prevent and treat gum disease. They professionally clean your teeth and show you the best way to remove plaque. Plaque is a sticky film of bacteria that forms on teeth. If not brushed away properly, this hardens to form tartar, which you can’t remove yourself.

As well as offering our original hygiene clean, we now offer ‘The Gleam Clean’. This is for patients with heavier staining as a result of red wine/tobacco/coffee/tea use. This treatment includes the use of the ultrasonic scaler, hand instrumentation followed by an intensive air polishing jet.

To book an appointment for a hygiene clean please call the practice on 01923859678.

  18. Halitosis

Bad breath, or Halitosis, can be a social nightmare. For those affected by halitosis, the embarrassment caused can be a barrier which leads to withdrawing form close personal contact with people; be they loved ones, friends or work colleagues.

The causes of halitosis are varied. Sometimes they can be the result of an on-going stomach problem or dietary intolerance. Occasionally it may relate to the mouth becoming dry if one becomes dehydrated.  However the vast majority of cases are related to the teeth and more usually the gums.

If a tooth is decaying, food may get stuck in the space and this will produce a smell that will contribute to the bad breath.  In many (if not most) cases, bad breath is the result of gum disease. Gum disease is caused by plaque bacteria that accumulate at the gum margins of the teeth. These bacterial colonies will release toxins that make the gums bleed and in some instances draw back to make the teeth loose. It is this bleeding and these toxins that cause halitosis.

Removing the causes of halitosis as opposed to masking the symptoms with mouthwashes is key to treating the problem. Mouthwashes may in the long term make the problem worse if it contains alcohol as this will dehydrate the mouth and add to the existing problem.

If you are suffering from bad breath your first action should be to see your dentist. If a diagnosis of gum disease or tooth decay is made, the appropriate action can be taken such as seeing the dental hygienist or having a filling. In the majority of cases this will resolve the issues that you are having. In the event that gum disease or tooth decay is not deemed to be the cause of your halitosis, an appropriate referral may made, for instance to you GP.

Halitosis is rarely un-treatable so don’t let your life be a misery. If you have bad breath, visit your dentist and regain your confidence.

  19. School Visit

    2014-11-10 11.30.19

As a dental hygienist my role can be quite varied and extremely interesting!!!

Recently I was invited to Hertsmere Jewish Primary School where I was lucky enough to spend some time with 60 fabulous children in Year 3 (ages 7-8).

As part of the national curriculum the children have to learn all about teeth, good oral hygiene and diet. They had already learnt so much from their teachers and were very vocal in sharing all their knowledge with me .

Together we discussed how to brush teeth correctly and the children loved using the demonstration models to practise on. They were very interested in looking at x-rays and learning the names and different functions of the teeth.

We chatted about healthy and unhealthy snacks and even discussed the tooth fairy!

All of the children were given a little goodie bag to take home and I was thrilled to receive beautiful thank you cards from them.

I hoped they enjoyed the visit as much as I did.

  20. Dental Implants

There are a number of reasons why a tooth may be lost. It could be because the tooth has decayed or broken to the point that it cannot be restored. It could also be because the root support has become affected by gum disease and the tooth has become too loose to keep in place.

Whatever the reason you may find yourself with a missing tooth, there is never any need for you to accept the gap. Dental implants provide a fixed long term solution to tooth loss. Traditionally, when a tooth was missing, the options involved either leaving the gap, placing a denture (which would need to be removed and cleaned each day) or restoring the gap with a bridge. Bridges, like implants, are fixed options. However, their major drawback is that they require the teeth either side of the gap to be filed down and are therefore not particularly conservative.

Implants on the other had provide a false tooth that is as firm (if not firmer) than natural teeth and without the need to interfere with the teeth either side of the gap. They thus provide a perfect replacement with minimal damage.

So how do they work? Put simply, the titanium implants are placed in your bone and allowed to integrate. This process is known as “osseointegration” and is the biological process that allows attachments to be made in bone and forms the basis of other medical procedures such as hip replacements. Once the osseointegration process has taken place (and as a rough guide, for dental implants, this is anything between 12-20 weeks depending on the density of your bone), a false tooth (crown or bridge) can be attached to the implant. The implant is therefore acting as a new root.

If you would like to know more information about how implants can replace your missing teeth, contact the clinic on 01923 859678 and ask to speak to our treatment plan coordinator to arrange a free consultation.
